For most of my sixty years I have always loved the sounds of the banjo, whether they be from my grandmother who played a folk/parlor style, or old-time mountain banjo–fretted or fretless–rag-time, jazz, and Irish tenor to, of course, the wonderful bluegrass banjo music of Earl Scruggs. The tunes in this book reflect many moods and forms for banjo music that bring together old tunings (used mostly by frailing style players) with two and three-finger picking techniques more akin to bluegrass styles. Some of these tunes have found their way into films and theatre where I have long felt a strong interest. Some tunes have a strong melody line, and some are tunes that project atmosphere and dimension in time.

I hope you enjoy the tunes in this book in the ever-growing world of the banjo!

Sincerely,

Tony Ellis
